Charleston Huntington, WV, October 7, 2026 — The Huntington YMCA has officially commenced construction on a new multi-sport turf field, marking a significant milestone for the organization and the local community. This project, which has been in development for several years, aims to provide enhanced athletic facilities for a variety of sports.
The new field is designed to be a versatile athletic space. It will feature a full-size soccer field, capable of hosting competitive matches. Additionally, the design includes the flexibility to divide the field, making it suitable for other popular sports such as football and lacrosse. This adaptability is intended to maximize the field’s usage and accommodate diverse athletic programs and community needs.
In addition to the playing surface, the project encompasses the development of accompanying amenities. Specific details regarding these amenities were not provided in the initial announcement, but such facilities typically include spectator seating, lighting for evening play, locker rooms, and potentially restrooms or concessions, all contributing to a comprehensive sports complex experience.
The groundbreaking ceremony signifies the commencement of the construction phase for this long-anticipated development. The project’s realization after years of planning highlights a commitment by the Huntington YMCA to invest in infrastructure that supports youth development, community engagement, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles through sports. The exact timeline for completion and the specific contractors involved in the project were not disclosed.
The introduction of a modern turf field is expected to offer a durable and consistent playing surface, less susceptible to weather-related disruptions compared to traditional grass fields.
